The reason?
The two Delaware schools are in the same division (I-AA) and have played each other in every sport except football. Delaware State is a traditionally black school and Delaware is a school of the lighter persuasion. There is no firm consensus as to why the schools haven’t met on the gridiron yet but it didn’t enter the national consciousness until a Blue Hen alum wrote a column for ESPN.com Page 2 which carried this money quote:
The University of Delaware's persistent refusal to face Delaware State University in football is cowardly, pig-headed, self-righteous and, worst of all, oozing with racism.Whether or not the powers that be at UD are racist isn’t for me to say but their refusal to schedule a game between two schools separated by 45 miles is truly puzzling. The two Delaware schools have the odd distinction of being two schools in the same state having never met on the field of play.
It will be interesting to listen to the sound bites coming out of the two schools this week.
Let the games begin!

I think it's just "Division II" now... they dropped the "-A."
And Montana didn't get into the Championship this year? They usually have a good team -- won the Div II title when I was at the U in Missoula. Man, that town was football crazy!! (As much as a Div II town can be, I guess.)
Actually it's now "Division I BSC" or some such thing. The BSC is Bowl Series Championship. Division II is Carrol College level.
